The Portrait Society's 2006 Portrait Academies

Richeson School of Art

Judith Carducci
September 29-30, 2006

The Kimberly, Wisconsin Portrait Academy opened with a dynamic presentation by guest instructor and Portrait Society Board member, Judith Carducci, as she demonstrated in pastels, painting host, Jack Richeson for 45 guests. A video camera and projector were set up so that all could see Judith's painting in progress during the demo. "Despite Jack's predilection for talking while posing, Judy did a fabulous job and the portrait is absolutely gorgeous," reported Terry Howell Stanley. Richeson provided a frame that would fit her support, and the finished work wowed guests and staff.

Saturday, Richeson hosted 33 for the workshop in the Richeson School of Art building. A group of college students arrived unexpectedly for the workshop, with instructions from their teacher to work from two different models. They were enthusiastic and hard-working, and Judith and the other attendees were appreciative of their company. An additional model was brought into the studio space to accommodate the group. Despite this, attendees still had ample space to work and move around.

Judy went continuously from easel to easel making sure that every artist there got their fair share of attention. Her critiques were on point and her suggestions for improvement concise and graciously offered. The artists were inspired to give their all and the resultant paintings were excellent. A minor glitch occurred with the lights toward the end of the day, after a thunderstorm helped douse most of the overheads! Several brought their portfolios for Judith's critique and were delighted with that opportunity as well.

We would like to extend special thanks to Jack Richeson & Co. for their generous support of the 2006 Portrait Academy series.
