November 3-4, 2006

Attendees of the 2006 Raleigh Portrait Academy kicked off the weekend with a reception for the Tri-State Portrait Competition. The reception was held at Artspace in conjunction with the First Friday Art Crawl and hosted 300 people over the course of the evening. State Ambassador, Luana Luconi Winner's studio was open. Refreshments were served and awards were presented by Vice Chair, Edward Jonas. The twelve works on display were selected from a group of several hundred entries by Virginia, North and South Carolina artists. First place was presented to

Following the reception, Dawn Whitelaw demonstrated in oils at the North Carolina Museum of History. Attendees were treated to an in-depth discussion of Dawn's philosophy and approach to the figure, as she painted North Carolina State Ambassador, Tom Edgerton.

The Saturday workshop began bright and early, with an 8:30 check-in at Artspace. Once again, guests were invited to Luana Winner's private studio for refreshments before the event began. Four models posed for the sold out event for attendees who were encouraged to work in the medium of their choice. Dawn Whitelaw and Edward Jonas were constantly moving through the space, offering suggestions and constructive criticisms. Workshop instruction ended at 4pm, and, after packing up their supplies, attendees were treated to portfolio critiques with Whitelaw and Jonas. The critique session wrapped up after an hour, and attendees and staff exchanged goodbyes and words of appreciation for yet another wonderful Portrait Academy.
