The Portrait Society held its second annual Art of the Portrait® conference in the nation's capitol,
Washington, D.C. We enjoyed three days with many of this country's most accomplished artist and experts as
they demonstrated and talked about the joys, frustrations and successes in the art of the portrait. Taking
time out of our busy schedules to come together and share ideas, experiences, techniques and methods can be
invigorating and stimulating.
Our featured guest speakers for this year's conference were William Draper, Daniel Greene, Everett Raymond
Kinstler and Burton Silverman. Also joining this distinguished panel of guest were Marshall
Bouldin, III, Wende Caporale, Judith Carducci, Jacob Collins, M. Stephen Doherty, Calvin Goodman, Ann Manry
Kenyon, Peggy Kinstler, Paul Leveille, and Bart Lindstrom. Major agency owners that attended were:
Beverly McNeil - Portrait Brokers of America, Ruth Reeves - The The Portrait Source, and Jac
ReVille - Portraits South.
Everett Raymond Kinstler, recipient of this years Gold Medal, was presented the award by Vice Chair
Edward Jonas in honor for his lifetime achievement and commitment to fine art portraiture. Tony Bennett, the
world famous entertainer, sent a video in which he offered his congratulations to Ray and President and Mrs.
Gerald Ford sent a letter that was read to the audience and presented to Ray in a leather binder.
Tom Wolfe gave the keynote address at the Saturday evening banquet which several times brought spontaneous
applause from the audience as he described the art scene as its exists at the dawning of this new century.
An entertaining and knowledgeable speaker, Mr. Wolfe's message reaffirmed the direction and purposes of the
Portrait Society. He declared "modernism has reached a point of absolute exhaustion, it's a new century, an
entirely new wave of art is ready to take the stage."
Historically, artists have benefited by coming together to share ideas and learn from each other. This conference
was designed to create that same opportunity for you.
