The Portrait Society of America held our fourth annual Art of the Portrait® conference in historic Philadelphia. This exciting event included an illustrated slide lecture by Richard Schmid, demonstrations or lectures by Jacob Collins, William Draper, Glenna Goodacre, Daniel Greene, Everett Raymond Kinstler, and Burt Silverman.

In conjunction with this distinguished panel of guests many of this country's most accomplished artists and experts made up the faculty including: Wende Caporale, Judy Carducci, Sandra Carpenter, Jean Daniel, M. Stephen Doherty, Winifred P. Gray, Calvin Goodman, Peggy Kinstler, Bart Lindstrom, Paul Leveille, Beverly McNeil, Vincent Miller, Michael Shane Neal, and Ruth Reeves.

Everyone who attended the conference came away with a rich sense of the traditions handed down from great portrait artists of the past. From the demonstrations of classical techniques, to the historic Philadelphia-area museum visits, to the lectures by artists who can trace their painting lineage back to the masters, all participants felt as if they were engulfed in the heritage of portraiture. It was an atmosphere both humbling and inspiring.

Capping off the weekend, participants had the option of visiting one of two truly fantastic venues. Members were able to take charter buses to visit the Brandywine River Museum, providing one last brush with history before heading home. As an added treat, a special exhibition of Wyeth pieces were displayed exclusively for Portrait Society members.

Those interested in an equally historic excursion - were able to take the trolley to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The third largest museum in the country, this museum holds the most important collection in the world of works by Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins. Given the opportunity to visit, members were also able to enjoy the works of Cassat, Renoir, Monet as well as Van Gogh held in this venerable institution.

The sentiments among the attendees was nearly unanimous: The 2002 The Art of the Portrait was educational and as always, truly inspirational. From the Welcome Reception to the Closing Ceremonies, faculty, attendees, and staff as well as many honored guests participated in an event celebrating the love of portraiture. Viewing the works of great portraitists, past and present in live demonstrations, or in the halls of some of the most amazing museums in this world, this event provided the impetus we needed to return to our studios with a renewed sense of pride and dedication. **
